One Airport serving three countries

Located at the borders of Switzerland, France and Germany, Basel-Mulhouse airport is serving a multi-international market for over 70 years. The airport is owned by Switzerland and France based on an international treaty signed by both governments back in the late 1940s. In order to underline its cross-border mission the airport positions itself under the trademark EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg.

The airport today, mirrors the variety of the European airline industry: Truly pan-European carriers; airlines such as easyJet operate a base with 11 aircraft; Wizz, Pegasus and Air Arabia Morocco show a dynamic development. Network carriers such as British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, Austrian and Turkish Airlines fly into their intercontinental hubs, by this offering worldwide beyond connections to the local industry, such as the pharmaceutical blue chips Roche and Novartis, logistics like DHL and Panalpina and car manufacturer PSA group. The over 100 mainly European destinations served directly from EuroAirport include also leisure spots such as the Cape Verde Islands, Luxor, Agadir, Djerba and Dubai.

The favorite US destinations for passengers are New York, Boston and San Francisco. The airport is expecting that the new single-aisle long range versions of Airbus and Boeing will sooner or later enable airlines to install direct flights between EuroAirport and the North American east coast. The first carrier that announced such an operation is the Canadian leisure specialist Air Transat. Since many years the Canadians link EuroAirport to Montreal during the summer season. From June 2019 onwards the new Airbus A321neoLR will be introduced on this route and EuroAirport will be the pioneering Swiss airport to host such an operation.

By its ideal geographical location EuroAirport is the natural gateway to the marvelous Swiss Alps, the French wine region around Colmar and Strasbourg, the German Black Forest where pure nature, fresh air and clean waters are within easy reach, these are strong attractions for tourists. This region between Basel-Mulhouse and Freiburg is also well known for its high level of cultural attractions, thermal spas and medical tourism. As distances are short, even Lucerne, Zurich, Milan, Paris, Venice or Munich are destinations visited by tourists landing at EuroAirport. The cruise ships leaving Basel on the river Rhine are highly popular by travelers from the USA, Canada and Australia. Dedicated ships are cruising for tourists from China. These interesting incoming business elements have convinced airlines and tour operators for instance from Japan and Korea to set up long-haul incoming flights using the EuroAirport as the entry point to the heart of Europe.

Not only passengers are attracted by the central European location, also air cargo business is making use of the close vicinity of the three major countries. Linked directly to the highway system and being close to the railway systems of France, Germany and Switzerland, the logistic industry benefits from a range of multimodal options available. The strong economy of the region is the backbone for full freighter and express cargo operations to and out of EuroAirport. Besides Qatar Airways cargo which is touching down four times weekly, Iberia Cargo, Turkish Airlines Cargo and Korean Air Cargo are operating scheduled full freighter services. In addition, DHL, FedEx, TNT and UPS connect several time daily to their intercontinental hubs.

With over 8.5 million passengers, 2018 will establish a new record for the airport. The airport expects further dynamic development and plans for over 13 million passengers in 2030. Based on this outlook, EuroAirport is preparing for a terminal modernisation and extension which will be finished by 2025. A direct train access to the airport is expected to be operational by 2028. The healthy economic environment with an above average GDP paired with competitive operational and financial conditions are highly appreciated by airlines serving EuroAirport. New entrants such as the Greek Aegean Airlines and the Spanish Iberia are recent examples and as from spring 2019 TAP Air Portugal will be the next new carrier touching down at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg.
