Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is the leading airport for travel to and from the Dominican Republic with direct flights arriving daily from around the world. Located less than 5 minutes from Puntacana Resort & Club, PUJ is strategically designed to ensure that every guest experience is undisturbed by air traffic or noise and that visitors are able to enjoy the serene, natural beauty of the property while benefiting from the airport’s close proximity.
With direct flights from over 28 countries and 96 cities worldwide, the Punta Cana region is accessible and practical for travelers. With over 7.6 million international passengers arriving each year, Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic and the second busiest in the Caribbean. Combined with the convenience for our private and executive aircraft guests using the airport’s General, VIP and FBO terminals, it’s easy to see why PUJ is the fastest growing airport in the Caribbean.
Located on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, within the Puntacana Resort & Club property, the airport is less than a two-hour drive from the capital city, Santo Domingo. It is also one of the first and largest privately owned and operated international airports in the world. Built in 1984 by Grupo Puntacana, the holding company of Puntacana Resort & Club, the airport makes Punta Cana one of the most accessible destinations in the Caribbean.
Punta Cana International Airport uses new technology such as oversized, industrial-scale ceiling fans for ventilation and air cooling, eliminating the need for central air conditioning.
Following a meticulous assessment of its existing waste management program, Grupo Puntacana (GPC) built the Recycling and Incineration Center (RIC) at the airport and began separating all garbage into recyclable, organic, and non-recyclable materials. With the large volume of recyclable materials produced, Grupo Puntacana soon created a completely new market for these items, which can be transported to Santo Domingo by truck for sale to larger buyers. At present, almost 60% of the waste that Grupo Puntacana generates is sent to the recycling facility instead of to landfill.
After 12 expansions, Punta Cana International Airport now has two terminals covering an area of 65,000 square meters with a capacity for handling more than 5,000 passengers per hour. The airport has a modern control tower and two runways measuring 3,100 meters in length and 45 meters in width, suitable for A380 aircraft and with a useful lifespan of 20 years.
The airport also has one 1,378-square meter hangar for executive-type aircraft, and two terminals with 30 parking bays that can accomodate planes ranging from narrow-body aircraft to the world’s largest passenger liner, the A380.
The facilities parallel to the taxiway include 16 boarding gates, three customs offices, 14 luggage belts, a migration office for arrivals and departures, a VIP lounge with swimming pool, approximately 203 check-in counters, kiosks, mobile checking counters, handicraft and duty-free shops, cafeterias, ice-cream parlors, pizzerias, bars, restaurants, bureaux-de-change, first aid stations, a cargo warehouse, parking spaces for more than 400 cars and buses, an aircraft catering kitchen, fuel depot, a fire station with six fire trucks, four ambulances, apartment buildings for employees and modern communications radio and navigation equipment, including the Punta Cana Approach Center, primary and secondary meteorological radar operated in mode S for improved safety and resulting in more visiting aircraft.
The airport receives all types of airplanes, including the Boeing 747-400 with tourists from Europe, North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. It accommodates light aircraft, helicopters and executive jets for local flights in its domestic terminal. The airport also has a cargo area for importation and exportation.
